Why We Got Started
Mark travels to Moraine Lake regularly since 2013 and has photographed and taught photography workshops over 500+ times at Moraine Lake.. He and his wife, Christine, fell in love with Moraine Lake during their engagement session, which eventually led to their wedding at the lake in 2018.
As access to Moraine Lake became increasingly restricted, Mark envisioned a service to help everyone experience the magic of a Moraine Lake sunrise - not just professional photographers with permits and shuttle passes.
In 2023, Moraine Lake Sunrise Shuttle & Tours was born, making these unforgettable sunrise experiences accessible to visitors from around the world.
Why Photographer-Led Tours Matter
When I founded Moraine Lake Sunrise Shuttle & Tours in 2022, I noticed something surprising: despite thousands of visitors photographing Moraine Lake every summer, almost no one was arriving at the right time or understanding the light they were working with.
Tour operators were treating sunrise as a transportation problem—get people there when the sun comes up, then leave. But as a landscape photographer who'd been shooting the Canadian Rockies for years, I knew the best light happens before sunrise, not during it.
The Difference Photography Expertise Makes
Being photographer-led isn't just a marketing angle for us—it fundamentally changes the experience:
- We arrive 60 minutes before sunrise, not at sunrise. This means you're shooting during blue hour and alpenglow—the 30-minute window when mountain landscapes look their absolute best.
- We teach you how to capture what you're seeing. Camera settings, composition techniques, why the light looks the way it does, and how to make the most of it.
- We understand that timing is everything. The difference between arriving at 5:00 AM versus 6:15 AM isn't just about crowds—it's about completely different light quality that produces completely different photographs.
- We position you for success. After 500+ sessions on Rockpile, I know exactly where to set up for optimal composition, unobstructed views, and the best angles for current conditions.

On every tour, I see guests experience that magical moment when alpenglow first touches the peaks and the entire scene transforms. That moment lasts about 12 minutes. When I personally lead tours or the Photography Workshop, I provide direct photography instruction. For our scheduled tours, I have trained our guides on the key viewpoints and optimal timing that make the difference to make sure you're positioned, prepared, and confident enough to capture it.
Whether you're shooting with a professional DSLR or a smartphone, whether this is your first sunrise or your hundredth, you'll leave with images you're proud of and techniques you can apply to all your future landscape photography.

Moraine Lake Magic
Moraine Lake is located 14km from the village of Lake Louise, in the heart of Banff National Park. World-renowned for its distinctive turquoise hue and backed by the majestic Valley of the Ten Peaks, it's one of Canada's most photographed destinations.
Named by explorer Walter Wilcox, the trail was first cut by Tom Wilson in 1900. The road was expanded in 1902, and the original teahouse opened in 1908. The lake holds deep cultural significance to the Indigenous peoples who have called this region home for thousands of years.

Moraine Meaning
Its name comes from the pile of rocks, or moraine, created by the receding Wenkchemna glacier over thousands of years - though scientists now believe it may actually be from a rockslide.
Famous Moments
Moraine Lake appeared on the reverse side of Canada's 20 dollar bill in 1969 and 1979. It's also referenced in the critically acclaimed video game "The Last of Us."
Its Colour
The distinct turquoise colour is caused by light refracting off rock flour - fine glacial sediment suspended in the water from the surrounding mountains.
